Why we started Van Life Emporium

We started Van Life Emporium because we couldn't find one.

That sounds glib. It isn't.

For a year we'd been quietly building out a van — a faded yellow LDV that's done two engines, a clutch and at least one too many overnight stops in lay-bys nobody should sleep in. Every weekend brought a new small problem to solve. A kettle that didn't fit the cupboard properly. An untidy drawer that wouldn't close on rough roads and we couldn't find anything in. A duvet that was either too hot or too cold to sleep with.

The kit existed. Of course it did. But it lived scattered across forty-five different websites. To buy what we needed for a single weekend, you'd spend an evening with eleven tabs open, wondering were these products right for van life, comparing shipping costs from companies you'd never heard of, hoping you weren't accidentally importing something that would arrive in a customs delay six weeks later.

It struck us, quietly at first, that there was a gap. Not for another outdoor megastore. Not for cheap dropship gear made in the same factory and rebranded twelve different ways. But for a small UK shop, run by people who actually live this life, stocking only the things we'd actually want in our van.

So we made one.

The brief was simple

Stock the kit that solves the small daily problems of life in a van. Make it easy to find. Send it quickly. Be honest about what works and what doesn't.

We chose to be small on purpose. A big shop with a thousand SKUs forces you to compromise — you sell everything that might possibly fit the category, regardless of whether it's any good. A small shop forces you to choose. And choosing well is the whole point.

So when we add something to Van Life Emporium, it goes through three tests:

Does it solve a real problem? Not an invented one. Not a problem the marketing department made up. A real one. Something we've personally sworn about on a wet Tuesday night in February.

Does it hold up? The road asks a lot of the kit you carry. Things shake, scrape, freeze, get knocked about. Anything we sell needs to survive that.

Would we actually pack it ourselves? If we wouldn't put it in our own van, it doesn't get put in yours.

That's it. Those are the rules. Not glamorous, but honest.

Five small things that make the biggest difference

The whole shop is built around the small things. Here are five we couldn't live without on the road:

Interior touches that make it feel yours

A van is small. You feel every cushion, every blanket, every textile that's working too hard or not at all. Our Van Lifestyle collection is the soft interior layer — throws in muted forest and oat, cushions that actually wear well, the small decor pieces that turn a converted box on wheels into somewhere you want to wake up.

The trick to van interiors isn't more stuff. It's a small number of well-chosen pieces, all working together. That's what we curate for.

Cooking that doesn't fight you

A good meal at the end of a long day is what turns a van into a home. We stock the kit that makes outdoor cooking feel calm instead of a balancing act — stoves that sit flat on uneven ground, kettles that fit small cupboards, pans that work over gas or fire pit alike.

We call this collection Embers Kitchen. Slow food, simple kit, eaten outside more often than not. That's the brief.

The kit you forget you need until you don't have it

Folding chairs that don't collapse when you sit in them. A cool box that actually keeps things cold for three days. A small folding table that's the right height for a mug of tea. The unglamorous, essential kit that makes the difference between camping and properly living on the road.

We call this Adventure Essentials — and it's probably the section we restock most often, because these are the items real van lifers buy first and replace least.

Light that does the work

Van interiors are dark. Most stock lighting is harsh, badly placed, and runs the battery down faster than you'd think. Our Lights, Gadgets and Gizmos collection is where we put the soft warm lighting, USB hubs, portable power, small bits of tech that actually earn their place — not gimmicks, not gadgets-for-the-sake-of-gadgets. The stuff that works.

A single well-placed warm light changes how the van feels at the end of the day. It's a small purchase that does outsize work.

Looking after the van that looks after you

The unglamorous bit. Cleaning kit, security, the boring practical layer that keeps the van itself going so the rest of your kit can do its job. Our Road Ready collection covers the cleaning products that don't strip paintwork, the locks and security pieces that actually work, the small maintenance items you'll be glad you packed when you need them.

We don't sell forty cleaning products. We sell the few that work and last.

And one for the love of it

There's also our Signature Collection — VLE-branded mugs, water bottles, totes, and wood prints. Things you'd actually want to use, not just brand merch for the sake of it.

The wood prints in particular have become a small obsession of ours — landscape photography printed on real wood grain, the kind of thing you'd hang in the van or in the house when you're not on the road. Made in small runs.

What we're not

We're not a megabrand. We don't pretend to be. We're a UK limited company run by two people, working with a careful set of suppliers who understand the brief.

We don't stock things we haven't checked. We don't carry forty kettles. We don't run flash sales on Black Friday or shout about discounts in our newsletter. The work is in the choosing — that's what you're paying for.

We're also not pretending to be the road. We don't tell you to live your best life or chase your dreams. We just try to make the small things smaller, so the big things — the actual road, the actual view, the actual hour of quiet at the end of a long day — can be what they should be.

That's the whole brief. Home is the road. And the road asks a lot of the kit you carry.

What we'd ask from you

A favour, if you're reading this and starting your van life journey:

Tell us what's missing. If there's a piece of kit you swear by that we don't stock, let us know. We'll try to add it. The shop grows in the right direction when people who actually live this life tell us what they need.

Email us anytime: hello@vanlifeemporium.com

Or just have a look around the shop. Pick up something small. See what you think.

Doors are open.
